In Thai boxing fighters will use their shins rather than their feet to make contact (and inflict damage) on their opponents. <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Rotate on the ball of your foot<\/span>&#8211;  (the fleshy bit below your big toe)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Unorthodox Way &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Step across to your left (&amp; forwards slightly)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Traditional Way is much quicker, but the Unorthodox Way can generate more power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s also easier and quicker to use the traditional method when ending a punch combination with a kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone isn&#8217;t checking the kick, or when throwing a kick straight off without a set-up, I do like to step across and turn my foot to the side, rather than rotate on the ball of my foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out my first kick below &#8211; by a much more significant amount.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Stepping across <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">and forwards<\/span> &#8211; you load up the hip flexor for additional power<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that more of your body weight contributes to the power of the kick, and you &#8216;displace&#8217; more of the opponent&#8217;s leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>The Jumping Technique that I use in the GIF above is a lot riskier however<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>You can easily jump head-on into a punch. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I used it in this competition because I could see that my opponent was badly fatigued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure to set up the kick well if you do use the step-across technique to generate additional power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Hip Extension &amp; Rotation on contact<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you land the kick &#8211; extend your hips\/straighten your body and keep rotating your hips &amp; upper body<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you land your kick, you should initiate a second movement &#8211; push your hips forward so that your body straightens, and rotate your upper body so that it is inline with your hips again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are throwing a right kick, your hips should straighten, and your left shoulder should rotate all the way backwards, so that you are almost looking behind yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skip to 2:30 of this video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_MHHvwAICzU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=149&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to pick on my friend Lee &#8211; this was his first time training, but you can see how his upper-body doesn&#8217;t rotate at all as he throws his kick.<br>\nIn contrast, the other handsome guy in the blue top is rotating his upper body so that his upper body is completely side-on to Lee when the kick lands, and his left shoulder is facing away from him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. This allows a &#8216;downward-angled&#8217; kick to dig in, rather than skip of the surface of the leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. sweeping\/striking your opponent<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stepping in with a punch<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Snapping out a front kick<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Checking &amp; then countering with a punch or kick<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whichever counter you choose, it&#8217;s always a good idea to condition your shins (and calves) so that you don&#8217;t collapse in pain after checking a kick &#8211; or so you can throw kicks without snapping your shin when someone checks it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Condition your shins by kicking the heavy bag. Don&#8217;t go straight into kicking baseball bats or anything silly, build up slowly by kicking the bag&#8230;then try sparring without shinguards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sparring without shinguards is actually safer (normally) as everyone tends to kick much lighter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking kicks on your legs, shins and calves is actually the best way to condition your legs to take kicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using Box Jumps &amp; Plyometrics is also a great way to build up your shin strength. You can counter this to a certain extent by stepping forwards &amp; slightly to your left as you throw your jab<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setting Up a Roundhouse Kick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If technique is everything, then the set up is almost everything!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roundhouse, especially the high roundhouse can be countered with straight punches &#8211; and you can easily get caught off balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>Setting up the High Roundhouse to The Head<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great way to set up for a headkick, is to <strong>kick low once or twice<\/strong> i.e. kick your opponent&#8217;s legs. Then <strong>next time &#8211; look low at the opponent&#8217;s leg but this time kick high.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>Dutch Style Set Up to the Roundhouse<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dutch style of kickboxing, involves throwing the roundhouse at the end of a punch combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A combination for example might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right Cross, Left Hook, Right Roundhouse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jab, Cross, Left Roundhouse (AKA inside leg kick)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jab, Cross, Left Hook, Right Roundhouse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using punches makes your opponent &#8216;fight on two fronts&#8217; and hides the kick to a certain extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using punches is also a great way to get your opponent to cover up &amp; protect his or her head, leaving an opening for a low leg kick<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>Throw Feints to set up a Roundhouse<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A general tip for setting up a powerful kick is to throw feints. Planks are also good for building a &#8216;base&#8217; of core strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a good idea to build this base to protect your back and spine, before doing explosive rotational drills &amp; kicking which could lead to injury if you have a weak core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Develop Good Posture<br>\n<\/strong>Men beware of &#8216;anterior pelvic tilt&#8217;. You ideally need to get a PT or a friend\/mentor to show you the technique. Make sure that you are looking fowards and you shouldn&#8217;t &#8216;slouch&#8217; your back. If you can&#8217;t get a PT or mentor, then start with a VERY light weight, and film yourself to assess your technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*Study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5571909\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here <\/a>on the mechanics of a powerful kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Effective roundhouse kicking performance was characterized by <strong>rapid pelvic axial rotation, hip abduction, hip flexion and knee extension velocities<\/strong>, combined with r<strong>apid movements of the COM<\/strong> towards the target.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In English this means that you require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explosive hips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explosive core (in a rotational axis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explosive\/powerful legs to extend the leg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olympic Lifts, plyometrics and medicine ball drills with rotation are the best ways to develop this type of power. Be careful not to overtrain however!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Roundhouse Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <strong>Power really comes from the hips<\/strong> &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">extension<\/span> and rotation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olympics lifts help with hip extension; you can use band, &nbsp;hammer and medicine ball exercises to make your hips have more rotational power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve also noticed on a few Countdown to the UFC videos &#8211; people doing jumping\/rotating exercises and plyometrics. &nbsp;E.g. face forwards, jump up and backwards and rotate to face backwards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GzmazhZD2eM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=13&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technique, Technique, Technique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, the correct technique is crucial for developing a powerful roundhouse kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay relaxed and loose until you make contact with the opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>Hips rotate first<\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">then the leg<\/span> follows, <span style=\"color:#00ff00\">then your foot<\/span><\/strong> &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with a hook, when throwing a round kick, think about getting your hips through first, this loads your leg with elastic energy as it whips through after your hip has rotated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technique for a Right RoundHouse Kick<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plant or rotate your standing foot first (i.e. your left foot for a right roundhouse)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drive your right arm backwards for extra momentum &amp; keep your left hand covering your face\/chin if possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">Then drive your hips through using the momentum of your right arm (this usually involves leaning back somewhat)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color:#0000ff\">Then drive your leg towards your opponent<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color:#00ff00\">Then whip your foot through<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I like to imagine the stepping &amp; pivoting as one movement &#8211; a relaxed movement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Then the second movement is making contacting, driving into the opponent&#8217;s leg\/body and extending your hips.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay relaxed throughout, think about &#8216;relaxed speed&#8217; not power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relaxation &amp; good mobility is key for an effective striking style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although hip mobility is crucial for high kicks, you need good posture and therefore good flexibility to train &amp; drill explosive roundhouse kicks without getting injured.<br>\nIf you sit down all day at work, or drive a lot, you will need to stretch your hip flexors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With a hook I tell people to imagine throwing a discus<\/strong>, the hand with the discuss comes through after the hips and shoulders. &nbsp;Same for a hook, and kind of the same for a kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Bend your leg and then extend it before it lands.
