A fighter\u00a0definitely won&#8217;t leave the cage in the same neurological state as he entered it, that&#8217;s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Confusion, thowing-up, aggression are some of the short-term effects, permanent brain-damage can be a long term effect.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CwXtAd_1Xos?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=116&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><strong>What to Eat After a KO \/ Fight<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h6><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/paleoedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/968x800xNutrition-for-Concussions-Based-on-Site-of-Injury-2.png.pagespeed.ic.a7c9REJ6GG.png\" alt=\"Nutrition for Concussions Based on Site of Injury\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/paleoedge.com\/how-nutrition-can-help-concussions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Image Source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>The general rule is to <strong>avoid inflammatory foods<\/strong> such as gluten, alcohol, caffeine and sugar for at least 72 hours after a concussion &#8211; or a fight in general. This is to minimise the neurotransmitter &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Substance_P\" target=\"_blank\">substance P<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Consuming glutathione, <a href=\"http:\/\/mmqb.si.com\/2014\/04\/17\/mouse-concussions-nfl-cte\" target=\"_blank\">in mice<\/a> at least, has been shown to offset some of the damage caused by a concussion. You can buy &#8216;NAC powder&#8217; which will boost glutathione levels in the body.<br \/>\nTurmeric has also been shown to offset some of the effects.<br \/>\nOther literature recommends:<br \/>\nVitamin D &#8211; for it&#8217;s neuroprotective properties<br \/>\nFish Oil &#8211; To reduce inflammation<br \/>\nPineapple &#8211; For its bromelain content &#8211; a strong, natural anti-inflammatory.<br \/>\nMagnesium &#8211; For it&#8217;s anti-inflammatory properties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><strong>What to Do<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>Get plenty of rest, again or the first 3 or 4 days. Recent research suggests that some light, LIGHT, no-contact exercise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/ubreporter\/archive\/2010_01_20\/willer_concussion\" target=\"_blank\">may in fact accelerated recovery<\/a> from concussion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Why Do some Fighters Have Good Chins, Whilst Others Don&#8217;t?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>On a tangent slightly, and I&#8217;ll probably right another post on this, but having read some articles and studies it seems to boil down to:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Shape of the Jaw<\/span> (and maybe, the Shoulders) &#8211; Not 100% on this one, but people with broader jaws and shoulders appear, to absorb shots better. e.g. Mark Hunt, Roy Nelson, Cabbage, Fedor, BJ Penn<br \/>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qIMVwYrmTwA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Neck Strength<\/span> &#8211; study <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/nsca-scj\/Citation\/1991\/10000\/BOXING__Reasons_to_strength_train_for_amateur.3.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Previous number\u00a0of concussions \/ KOs\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">A genetic &#8216;polymorphism&#8217; known as\u00a0Apolipoprotein E<\/span> \u00a0&#8211; study <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/cjsportsmed\/Abstract\/2010\/11000\/Apolipoprotein_E_Genotype_and_Concussion_in.13.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Carriers of all 3 APOE rare (or minor) alleles assessed in this study were <strong>nearly 10 times more likely to report a previous concussion<\/strong> and may be at a greater risk of concussion versus noncarriers&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poor Amir Khan&#8230;one thing that I don&#8217;t like about the popularity of combat sports, including the UFC, is how we kind of assume a fighter is fine after a KO and are ignorant to the potentially life-changing effects.
