My training is so sporadic at the moment that I keep forgetting bits. I like to turn my chin so that it&#8217;s against my shoulder though, and lean back with a high elbow when defending.<\/p>\n<h2>Roll after a Lead Cross<\/h2>\n<p>People love to counter crosses. Use the Floyd Mayweather style roll to get out of the way<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CVGI_nK-xR0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=47&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Change up your Pace and Rhythm<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Practice this on the bag and pads. When on the bag, don&#8217;t just go in and out &#8211; throwing a 3 or 4 punch combo, then moving around for a few seconds and getting back into range.<\/p>\n<p>This pattern becomes predictable and everyone has a &#8216;twitch&#8217; as to when they&#8217;re going to throw. Throw feints &#8211; just twitch your shoulders, throw feeler jabs, throw single punches, throw a jab &#8211; then step into range, throw combos.<br \/>\nSometimes you may want to be less mobile, and just wait for your opponent to throw then counter. Switch it up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throw feints<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t steady yourself then throw, throw from weird angles<\/li>\n<li>Vary combos, throw single punches &amp; 2, 3, 4 punch combos<\/li>\n<li>Stay in range sometimes, other times move in and out<\/li>\n<li>Practice sustained attacks of forward movement<\/li>\n<li>Other times be more relaxed &amp; patient and just out of range<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step into Opponent&#8217;s Punches (if he&#8217;s taller)<\/h2>\n<p>More of a personal note to myself &#8211; other people like to dodge and move and pivot. I like to do that sometimes, but as a former 5ft 10 LHW fighter, I have learnt to step into punches to get into range. In thai boxing I&#8217;ll cover up and step forwards with my right (rear foot), to the right and throw an inside leg kick. This is important if you&#8217;re short for your weight class.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good against taller opponents<\/li>\n<li>Use feeler jab to invite a counter &#8211; then step forwards as they throw counter<\/li>\n<li>Throw jab, cover up &amp; <strong>move head off centre-line*<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Move Head off the &#8216;centre line&#8217;.<\/strong> Worth mentioning again, or you will walk into a punch<\/li>\n<li>Step forwards into your range<\/li>\n<li>Mix up &#8211; other times &#8211; stay out of range, make him come to you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*To move head off centre line &#8211; bend your right leg and duck to the right hand side. Cover the right hand side of your head to avoid a left hook or uppercut from your opponent.<\/p>\n<h2>High Elbow on Straight Punches<\/h2>\n<p>In a street fight, or at least a confrontation that starts toe to toe, I would say do the opposite, it&#8217;s different without gloves on and it does slow the punch down a bit.<\/p>\n<p>But, you definitely get more power. Imagine you&#8217;re trying to skim your ear with your elbow as you throw a jab or a cross and turn your thumb right down.<\/p>\n<p>I would mix this up with faster, feeler jabs with the elbow down and the thumb up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slower but more powerful<\/li>\n<li>Mix up with other styles of straight punches<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;skim the ear&#8217; with your elbow turned up for more power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When in close and in an actual fight, I think punching with low elbows, is actually the best option as it&#8217;s much quicker<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/klva17eeqtY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=89&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From further out though, the high elbow definitely generates more power. With straight punches, start the punch with a relaxed flick from the shoulder then twist from your back foot and drive again from the elbow as your arm extends.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to doing an Olympic Lift like a power clean, you have 2 points of &#8216;explosive power&#8217;. In a power clean you drive from the feet &amp; legs in the pick up stage, then explode again with the hips.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Boxing Combinations &#8211; Start the Second Punch as Soon As you&#8217;ve Started the First<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t wait until your jab has finished, until you&#8217;ve finished your cross, for example.
