Here’s some music! (just requires a repetitive song, similar to Zumba)
There are loads of basic footwork drills like fast feet and step and jab, but I’ve never seen a video whereby people drill complex footwork like Lomochenko L step, or the next level movement that TJ and Dom Cruz have displayed.
However, either way, the idea is to complete repetitions in orthodox stance, and then southpaw.
Similar to zumba, you’ll be moving a step or two back and forwards, and 10 cards or so to the left and then the right.
The idea is to build up repetitions of highly effective footwork ‘moves’ to enhance your boxing and MMA footwork quickly, efficiently, and drastically.
This will be hard and tedious to begin with. So start with the Pivot and perform 10 in orthodox, before attempting the movement in southpaw stance.
Start in Orthodox stance, Except for the Lomachenko L-step – which he does in southpaw.
| Boxing Footwork Move | Famous Boxer | Brief Description | YouTube Link |
| Pivot | Floyd Mayweather | From your stance, pivot on the ball of your lead foot (left for orthodox stance), rotating your body at a 45-90 degree angle to change direction or escape an opponent’s line of attack. Keep your rear foot in position for balance and follow-up punches. | https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5XfmyrIC2zY |
| L-Step | Vasiliy Lomachenko | Step your back foot diagonally backward and outward (forming the base of an “L”), then slide your lead foot to reset your stance. This move helps escape pressure while maintaining an angle for counterpunching. | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oHwImE_nRQ |
| Pendulum Step | TJ Dillashaw | A rhythmic forward-and-backward hopping motion, shifting weight between feet. Often used to close distance quickly or retreat while remaining ready to attack. Ideal for fighters using constant movement. | |
| Peek-a-Boo Shuffle | Mike Tyson | A footwork technique involving small, quick, bouncing steps while staying in a tight guard. This creates unpredictable movement, allowing for explosive forward attacks or evasive maneuvers. | https://youtu.be/B5dzrDM2_Hs?si=tikjEKgu979qmdwt&t=114 |
| Lateral Movement | Dominick Cruz | Quick, short steps to the left or right while keeping your stance. Used to create angles, evade attacks, and reposition for counterpunching opportunities. Cruz often uses exaggerated shifts for unpredictability. | |
| Check Hook | Floyd Mayweather | A defensive maneuver combining lateral movement and a hook. As your opponent rushes in, pivot off your lead foot (left for orthodox stance) while throwing a left hook to intercept their attack and escape to an angle. | |
| Hop Step | Lerdsila | A dynamic movement where you hop forward and backward in quick succession to adjust distance and rhythm. Common in Muay Thai but effective in boxing to avoid linear attacks and create countering opportunities. | https://www.youtube.com/shorts/hYKYqSYBrv0 |
| Matrix Slip | Rose Namajunas | A defensive move where you bend your upper body backward at the waist to evade straight punches (like a jab or cross). Combine this with lateral footwork to return to a balanced stance. | https://youtu.be/XKQlNJcPzIQ?si=37ny7PjzU-aak-sN&t=26 |
