Leucine Review / Overview

Warning – Leucine has been linked to the growth of prostate cancer.  Research on Leucine has also been criticised for being part funded by the Dairy Industry.

What Protein Contains Leucine?

Whey protein is touted as being the best form of protein because it increased protein synthesis by the greatest amount.  This is said to be due to its superior Leucine content and it’s ability to activate protein synthesis via the ‘mTor pathway’.
Leucine is found in high concentrations in dairy, you can also buy separate supplements containing isolated leucine.

What is Leucine?

Leucine is one of the Branch chained amino acids. it is also an essential amino acid.  Essential amino acids are those amino acids that are therefore required in the diet because the body cannot synthesise them.  Histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine are the essential amino acids.

What is the Research on Leucine?

Here are a couple of studies:
Leucine increases protein synthesis
Leucine increases endurance.

What is HMB?

HMB is a metabolite of leucine. You can see more information here:

What are the Side Effects of Leucine?

Quite hefty, potentially – apparently prostate cancer ‘loves’ leucine and basically feeds off it. More info here – http://www.scienceinpublic.com.au/media-releases/prostate
