Is Hydrogen Water a Scam? [2024]

No, I don’t think it is a scam.

I’ll be honest, I don’t fully understand how it works, but there are studies showing it can help with a range of ailments including IBS, and it can also enhance athletic performance.

There is so much research supporting the health benefits, it surely isn’t a scam:

Water, as you know is H20, but I believe that dissolved hydrogen in water, has different effects.

The hydrogen in water, is bound to another hydrogen molecule and an oxygen molecule.

As molecular hydrogen is in a free state, it behaves differently to the hydrogen in water.

If molecular hydrogen is a tennis ball, then H20 is like a basketball.

In ‘normal water’, the hydrogen is bound to the oxgen molecule, and so has a completely different effect on the body, compared to ‘molecular hydrogen’ which is hydrogen that is not bound to another molecule.

What to look for when buying a hydrogen water bottle?

Look for a hydrogen water machine with a PEM membrane.

Choose a machine that uses solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.

You can normally go to Importyeti.com and find brands on there, and then buy direct from suppliers on Aliexpress or Alibaba. However, I was unable to locate a big brand like ECHO GO.

How do You take Hydrogen Water Tablets?

Check the instructions with the specific tablets you have.

I have the Dr Mercola ones. It is important to use the right volume of water. If you use too little water with a tablet, the water will become fully saturated with molecular hydrogen, and you will lose a percentage of it into the air.

Drink the water as soon as the tablet has dissolved.

How Much Hydrogen Water Should You Drink?

At your own risk – consult your doctor – studies suggest that consuming 4mg to 7mg of total molecular hydrogen, via water, will produce health benefits.

To quote a reply to my comment on H2Minutes YouTube video

“The Mercola tablets are marketed at 8.0 mg/L (ppm) in 500 mL of water, however, to be accurate the maximum dissolved hydrogen level measure with Gas Chromatography is 7.3 mg/L (ppm) or 3.7 mg of H2 dissolved into 500 mL of water.

The lab report can be viewed on the H2HUBB site: https://h2hubb.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/HRW_Rejuvenation_Final_Test_Report_v2_pilot_4-28-20-1.pdf

E.g.: 7.3 mg/L (ppm) x 0.5L = 3.7 mg of H2 Also keep in mind, most of the hydrogen gas is not fully dissolved into the water but exists in a quasi-dissolved state (e.g. nanobubble gas cloud). We do not know how much of this quasi-dissolved hydrogen gets into the blood stream, therefore, we can only confidently say that the client will receive approx 1.25-1.5 mg of H2.

That is because we know that tablets super saturate the water with dissolved hydrogen gas up to 2.5-3.0 mg/L (ppm).  E.g.: 2.5 mg/L (ppm) x 0.5L = 1.25 mg of H2 The remaining 4.8 mg/L (ppm) above the 2.5 mg/L (ppm) reading is in the quasi-dissolved state (e.g. nanobubble gas cloud). There are no guarantees on the quasi-dissolved hydrogen gas. It is possible we receive much of that gas into the blood stream but we will not know until a blood analysis study is conducted to confirm the amount. Personally, I think we receive some of the quasi-dissolved gas if consumed quickly enough (within 2 minutes of the tablet fully reacting) and therefore I think a conservative figure is that 1 tablet will provide 2~3 mg of H2.

Some think it is upwards of 6-7 mg of H2, I don’t subscribe to that amount. We really need more data.

I say all this to say, that it’s not best to think of open-cup tablets in terms of its PPM. Many companies will market it that way which is unfortunate, as it will give people a false conclusion. E.g. Tablet hydrogen water is exactly the same as regular hydrogen water with dissolved hydrogen. E.g. 8 mg/L (ppm) tablet water (containing both dissolved and quasi-dissolved hydrogen gas) is the same as water that contains 8.0 mg/L (ppm) of fully dissolved hydrogen gas.  E.g. Hydrogen water systems are pointless. I can just buy hydrogen tables as they will give me 8-12 ppm.   In my professional opinion it is best to think in terms of total milligrams regarding these tablets.

1 tablet will give you approx 2~3 mg of H2.

We will have more answers in time.  I hope this helps.  I know it can be confusing. Concerning everything else (bottles, machines etc), it is best to use what I taught in the video.  Formula: H2 concentration x volume (liters or milliliters) = milligrams of H2.  1-3 mg of H2/day or more appears to be therapeutic for the human body and clinical trials are administering up to 15 mg of H2/day.  So 2 to 3 tablets per day would be a great place to start.”

Can Hydrogen Water Help with Allergies?

Yes, H2 Water and gas therapy can help alleviate allergy symptoms by reducing inflammation. There is more information about the effect in this research paper.

Hydrogen Water Scientific Studies

Here are some additional studies –

“Conclusion

Numerous preclinical studies have pointed out the striking beneficial effects of hydrogen therapy across a wide range of diseases. Only a limited number of human studies have been reported till date, all of which have demonstrated the benefits of hydrogen therapy in the clinical setting. It is however remarkable to note that no adverse effects have been reported in the human studies related to administration of hydrogen therapy. With several ongoing studies and continued interest in hydrogen therapy, the future looks promising for its clinical use as an adjunctive treatment of various neurological diseases.”

“Electrolyzed hydrogen water (EHW), enriched with molecular hydrogen, demonstrates remarkable antioxidative capabilities, indicating potential benefits for various diseases. Inflammation-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) amplify inflammation, leading to secondary oxidative stress and creating a crosstalk between ROS and inflammatory responses. This crosstalk contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of chronic diseases. EHW interrupts this crosstalk, reducing inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress across various disease models, suggesting therapeutic potential. EHW is also known for its anti-inflammatory effects, extending to pain management, as evidenced in models like sciatic nerve ligation and inflammatory pain. In an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) model, EHW effectively alleviates abdominal pain, mitigating 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced inflammation and oxidative stress, offering insights for clinical applications. Additionally, hydrogen selectively targets harmful radicals, and EHW intake helps balance stress-induced hormonal dysregulation, potentially easing disorders associated with chronic stress.”

Since the publication of the first H2 paper in Nature Medicine in 2007, the biological effects of H2 have been confirmed by the publication of more than 38 diseases, physiological states and clinical tests in leading biological/medical journals, and several groups have started clinical examinations. Moreover, H2 shows not only effects against oxidative stress, but also various anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. H2 regulates various gene expressions and protein-phosphorylations, though the molecular mechanisms underlying the marked effects of very small amounts of H2 remain elusive.
